When all else fails, click and hold the mouse or trackpad button while restarting your Mac. If you don't see one, you can add a menu bar item to eject a CD or DVD. Use the Eject menu applet located in the Mac's menu bar. Launch the application and use the eject command to eject the CD or DVD. Some applications, such as Disk Utility, have an eject command in a menu or toolbar. One of the quickest ways to eject a CD or DVD is to right-click on its desktop icon and select Eject from the pop-up menu. You'll notice that the trash icon changes to an Eject symbol as the CD or DVD icon is positioned over the trash. Click and hold on the icon and drag it to the trash. Locate the desktop icon for the CD or DVD. On any keyboard, including those originally designed for use with a Windows PC, press and hold the F12 key until the CD or DVD is ejected from the drive. Press the Eject key to eject the CD or DVD from the drive. Some Apple keyboards have an eject key, usually located in the upper right corner of the keyboard. 
Believe it or not, sometimes it just gets dusty in there. If you experience other problems with your optical drive, I’ve found success with this: get a can of air from an office store and blow out the optical drive.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. There are complete instructions on how to do that in a PowerMax article called “ Two Great Go-To Fixes for a Temperamental Mac” that covers different model machines, but the process for an iMac is as follows: If you don’t have a USB mouse, or if the above doesn’t work, reset the SMC. At that point, you can release the mouse button, log in, and insert a disk in the drive. You can download and install VLC to play. This means that they also block screen mirroring when watching DVDs. You should hear the optical drive perform one full eject cycle. Apple has HDCP DRM protection for playing DVDs. Keep the mouse button held down until you reach the login window. Once the machine is powered off, hold the left mouse button down and re-power your iMac. Shut down your iMac by choosing “Shut Down” from the Apple Menu in the upper left corner of your desktop. If you have a USB mouse connected to your computer, try to reset the optical drive’s eject mechanism first. I ejected the CD I was just using and now the drive won’t accept anything.
